Two Arrangements for Your Mother
Mother's Day is once again upon us and while we love
, we also love to do things ourselves. Last year we showed you
how to create a hand tied bouquet
and this year we wanted to try our hand at making two arrangements with grocery store flowers. All these flowers were purchased at Trader Joe's with about $15. Around this time of year, stores have arrangements you can specifically get for Mother's Day, etc... but usually they're not that great.
What we looked for when shopping for flowers:
We wanted one thing of big blossoms (we were lucky TJ's had peonies today).
We wanted smaller flower buds and these tulips worked great for that.
We wanted something like this white stock that we got that would add texture and fullness to the arrangement.
We knew our color scheme ahead of time and looked for these types of flowers within that color scheme.
Foraging for greenery is a great way to add some variety to your arrangement. You can buy eucalyptus or other greenery from the store if you'd rather stay away from bug bites or poison ivy. Or if you live in an urban jungle. Or your neighbor has a shotgun (just stay out of their yard...)
Choose a vase that compliments the color scheme that you picked. We prefer a more airy and wild arrangement. Start by trimming all of the ends of the flowers at a 45 degree angle. Peel off any leaves that will be sitting inside of the vase.
You want to build a base with the greenery and your main centerpiece flowers. Add in your stock and then dot with the tulips and other filler flowers.
Continue to add the rest of the flowers and the greenery and add a sprig of vine to one of the sides. Don't be afraid to edit once you get your shape started. Remove any flowers or greenery that is wilting or just isn't working with your vision. You're good to go!
For the second arrangement, we made a small one with the leftover tulips, white stock and greenery and put it in a little glass.
The lesson here is: be creative, use a cool vase and make something special for your mom!
